Syrian Capital to Host Anti-Terrorism Conference This Week

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria plans to hold an international conference in Damascus later this week on fighting terrorism and extremism, the Syrian Ministry of Information announced.

The ministry will stage the conference on the fight against Takfiri terrorism with the support of President Bashar al-Assad on July 24 and 25, an unnamed source was quoted by Arabic-language Rai al-Youm news website as saying.

He said 250 activists have been invited to the conference and about 100 independent figures from foreign states have announced their readiness to participate in the international event.

Representatives from some Arab states, like Lebanon and Iraq, as well as a number of non-Arab countries, such as Iran and Russia, will also attend the conference, the source said.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.

The US and its regional allies have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria for more than four years.
