Speaker Stresses Iran Parliament’s Watch on JCPOA Implementation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani underscored that the lawmakers will keep a close watch on the implementation of a final nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

In a meeting with visiting European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in Tehran on Tuesday evening, Larijani said the parliament works carefully to make sure the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) complies with the country’s Constitution and interests.

“What’s more important is how that agreement would be implemented, as the parliament will monitor its implementation with sensitivity,” Larijani added.

He further hailed the promising prospect of Iran-EU cooperation in the future, saying, “Iran and the European Union have common interests in promoting bilateral cooperation, which can help improve the regional situation and overcome the current threats in order to create stability and calm in the Middle East.”

Mogherini, for her part, praised Iran as a “major and powerful” partner for the European Union, and voiced the 28-nation bloc’s determination to restore its ties with Tehran in all fields.

Mogherini’s trip to Iran was the second leg of her visit to the Persian Gulf region. She earlier made a trip to Riyadh on Monday and held talks with Saudi officials, mainly on the recent conclusion of Iran nuclear talks.

The EU foreign policy chief coordinated the nuclear diplomacy with Iran on behalf of the sextet.
