Bahrainis Call for Release of Jailed Opposition Leaders
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – People of Bahrain poured into the streets in different cities to condemn the oppressive actions by the Al Khalifa ruling regime and renew the call for the freedom of political prisoners, including opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.
Carrying Bahrain’s flags and pictures of jailed figures, participants in the Thursday rallies across the Persian Gulf country called for the release of Sheikh Salman and other opposition leaders, according to al-Wefaq National Islamic Society website.
Sheikh Salman was arrested in late December 2014 over alleged anti-regime incitements. Manama accuses him of seeking regime change and collaborating with foreign powers.
Demonstrators also condemned the Al Khalifa regime's harsh action against residents of the tiny island of Sitra.
The security forces have been carrying out house-to-house searches following the deaths of two policemen in a bombing on Sitra.
Since mid-February 2011, thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations on the streets of Bahrain.
Protesters initially called for political reforms and a constitutional monarchy. However, the demand later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.
