Iran Looking for Better Ties with Saudi Arabia, Neighbors: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday voiced the country’s willingness to have more friendly relations with all of its neighbors including Riyadh, saying certain problems have hindered the thaw in ties.

One of the results of the recent nuclear agreement reached between Tehran and world powers was the trust created in the leaders of those countries that previously had doubts about Iran’s nuclear intentions, Rouhani said in a press conference held in Tehran.

Iran seeks improved relations with all of its neighbors including Saudi Arabia, the Iranian president said, adding that the government has already voiced its readiness to improve ties with Riyadh since he took the office.

Unfortunately, certain problems happened, including those in Yemen, which spoiled the good atmosphere, he added.

Rouhani further expressed the hope that Saudi officials would prepare the grounds for better ties with Tehran, and stop killing innocent people in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia began a military campaign against Yemen on March 26 – without a UN mandate – in an attempt to undermine the Ansarullah movement and to restore power to fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

World Health Organization has said that 1,859 civilians have been among the total of 3,984 people killed in Yemen until July 19. Local Yemeni sources, however, put the fatality figure at much higher.
