Iran Marks Sacred Defense Anniversary with Nationwide Parades
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Armed Forces staged military parades across the country on Tuesday morning to commemorate the Sacred Defense Week, which marks the onset of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran 35 years ago.
In capital Tehran, the parades were held at the mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, south of the city.
President Hassan Rouhani delivered a speech during the ceremony.
Several other officials, including senior military commanders, attended this year's parades.
Different units representing the Army, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), the Law Enforcement (police), and the Defense Ministry took part in the parades in Tehran and other provincial capitals.
The most recent achievements of the Iranian armed forces in missile industry, equipment for the ground, naval and air defense forces as well as communication gear were put on display in the event.
In Iran, the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war is known as the Sacred Defense, and the Sacred Defense Week is held on the anniversary of the beginning of the war.
The Sacred Defense Week begins on Shahrivar 31 in the Iranian calendar (September 22 this year), which is the day Iraq invaded Iran and began the imposed war on the country in 1980.
