Iran Forms Committee to Pursue JCPOA Implementation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian foreign ministry established a special committee to follow up on the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the text of a comprehensive nuclear deal finalized by Tehran and world powers on July 14.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif ordered Seyed Abbas Araqchi, his deputy for legal and international affairs, to form and lead the committee.

The move comes after the United States on September 17 appointed Stephen D. Mull as Lead Coordinator for implementation of the nuclear agreement.

Zarif, who left Tehran for New York earlier today, is also scheduled to pursue the implementation of the JCPOA during his stay there.

The first joint commission meeting between deputy foreign ministers of Iran and Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) will be held in New York on the sidelines of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly. However, the exact date for the meeting has not been yet set.

The joint commission, comprising representatives of Iran, the Group 5+1, and the European Union (EU), is tasked with implementing the terms laid down in the JCPOA and its annexes.

Earlier, US Secretary of State John Kerry said he is set to meet his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in New York on the sidelines of the UN session.
