Iran’s Velayati: Foreign States Cannot Decide for Syrian People

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran’s Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s support for the Syrian people’s right to self-determination, saying that “reactionary” states in the Middle East cannot decide for Syrians.

Speaking in a meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil in Tehran on Sunday, Velayati pointed to the ongoing crisis in Syria, saying that Tehran and Beirut have a common stance on the issue and are opposed to any foreign intervention in Syria and the region.

He further appreciated the Lebanese nation’s supports for the resistance of the Syrian people against foreign-backed militancy in the crisis-stricken country.

Velayati slammed any foreign intervention in Syria, saying that “reactionary countries of the region or European states” cannot decide for the people of the Arab country.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups currently controlling parts of it.

According to the United Nations, more than 240,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Earlier on June 2, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the resistance of the Syrian government and people against foreign-backed terrorist groups in the Arab country, saying that Tehran is determined to side with Damascus to the end of the crisis.
