Preparations Made to Meet Energy Demands in Hard Winter: Iranian Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) has made all preparations for a harsh cold season, the company’s chief announced, giving an assurance that the natural gas storage is adequate to deal with any possible shortage.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Abbas Kazemi said enough gas has been stored to meet the energy demands in wintertime.

His comments came after warnings that an El Nino weather system is expected to pummel the country with torrents of rain and cause flooding and freezing temperatures in autumn and winter.

Kazemi stressed that there will be “sustained energy security” given the fact that new phases of the country’s giant South Pars gas field are also going to come on stream.

“The Oil Ministry has considered the necessary planning to supply the power plants’ fuel so they will not face any fuel shortages,” he emphasized.

Last week, Iran’s Crisis Management Organization said it has formulated a contingency plan after forecasts of a strong El Nino system.

Climate experts are now all but certain that an El Nino climate event is underway that could potentially become one of the strongest since 1950.

El Nino is seen as one of three key climate patterns that could lead to changes in global temperature.

The event occurs when the waters of the Pacific become exceptionally warm and distort weather patterns around the world.
