Uranium Exchange to Conform to Leader’s Guidelines: Iranian Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) made it clear that the exchange of nuclear materials with Russia will take place in conformity with the guidelines set by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

Behrouz Kamalvandi said on Sunday that full attention will be paid to the process of exchanging nuclear fuel with Russia.

Iran will be careful that the enriched uranium it will give to Russia in exchange for other nuclear materials would match the amounts specified in the agreements, he added.

Last week, AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi said Tehran has been holding tight negotiations with Moscow over the past eight months on the exchange of nuclear fuel.

Salehi said one of the strong points of a final nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) is the chance for the country to exchange nuclear fuel.

Ayatollah Khamenei in a letter to President Hassan Rouhani on October 21 highlighted nine main points that the administration will need to take note of regarding the course of implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

One of the points in the Supreme Leader’s letter stresses that, “The trade of the available enriched uranium with the yellowcake (a type of uranium concentrate powder) with a foreign government will take place when a secure contract with sufficient guarantees is signed. The mentioned trade and exchange (of materials) should occur gradually and in multiple times.”
