UN Special Envoy in Iran to Hold Talks on Yemeni Crisis
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed arrived in Tehran on Wednesday to hold talks with senior Iranian officials over the latest developments in the Arabian Peninsula country.
During his official visit, the UN envoy is slated to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
Ould Cheikh Ahmed made the trip to Iran after his regional tour of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
In a telephone conversation earlier on Tuesday, Amir Abdollahian and the UN envoy had exchanged views on the latest efforts to resolve the Yemeni crisis.
The two sides emphasized that the conflicts has no military solution and can be resolved only through Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue.
Yemen's defenseless people have been under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime for nearly eight months.
On March 26, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies, including the UAE, began to launch deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
According to Yemeni health ministry, the death toll from the Saudi-led war so far has reached more than 6,000 people, including 1,277 children and 1,041 women.
