Iranian, Indian FMs Meet in Islamabad
ISLAMABAD (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held talks with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj on a host of issues, including ways to deepen bilateral relations between the two countries.
In the meeting in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Wednesday, Zarif emphasized that there is no obstacle in the way to boost cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi.
He was referring to the upcoming removal of anti-Iran sanctions with the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement reached between Iran and six world powers in July.
Zarif said in addition to the development of Chabahar, a strategic port in southeast Iran, the two countries can have cooperation in other fields, including banking.
India and Iran agreed in 2003 to develop the port, but the venture had made little progress because of Western sanctions tied to Tehran's peaceful nuclear program.
Zarif arrived in the Pakistani capital on Tuesday to participate in the Western Asia session of “Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process” conference.
Heart of Asia conference is part of the ‘Istanbul Process’, which provides a platform to discuss an agenda of regional cooperation with Afghanistan at its center.
