Suicide Bomber Kills Eight Near Baghdad Mosque: Officials

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A suicide bomber killed at least eight people near a Shiite mosque in eastern Baghdad Wednesday, security and medical officials said.

The blast in the Obeidi area also wounded at least 19 people, the officials said, AFP reported.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but in Iraq suicide bombings are a tactic almost exclusively used by ISIL.

ISIL (also known as Daesh) frequently targets  Shiite Muslims with bombings in crowded areas of the capital.

The terrorist group overran large areas north and west of Baghdad last year, and while Iraqi forces have retaken significant territory north of the capital, much of the country's west remains under extremist control.

Bombings in Baghdad have become less frequent since the ISIL offensive last year, apparently because the extremists have been occupied with fighting elsewhere.
