Iran’s Patience Has Limits, Judiciary Chief Warns Saudis
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani decried Saudi Arabia’s “irrational” conduct that “only undermines the Islamic world”, stressing that Iran’s prudent self-restraint does not mean the country’s patience is limitless.
“The Saudis should know that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s behavior toward them comes with dignity and prudence, but such dignity, prudence and silence (over Saudi provocations) does not mean that they can do everything,” Ayatollah Amoli Larijani said in a meeting of high-ranking judiciary officials in Tehran on Monday, stressing that the “Islamic Republic of Iran’s patience has limits.”
The official added that the Saudi rulers’ “illogical and irrational measures” will only undermine the Islamic world, serve the interests of the arrogance and strengthen terrorism.
Ayatollah Amoli Larijani then deplored Riyadh’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Iran as being inconsistent with the international norms, slamming the move as an “irrational and imprudent reaction.”
He said the Al Saud officials used an attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran as an excuse to make a fuss about Iran in international circles, although the Iranian officials condemned the attack.
In the early hours of January 3, angry demonstrators attacked Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran in protest at Riyadh’s execution of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.
Police arrested those identified as being involved in the attack and President Hassan Rouhani condemned the move afterwards.
However, Saudi officials decided to sever ties with Iran.
