Iran, Russia Stress Political Resolution of Crises in Syria, Yemen

In a phone call on Tuesday, Amir Abdollahian and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who is also the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s representative in Middle Eastern and African affairs, consulted on the latest political developments in the region, particularly those in Syria.

The two sides also discussed the recent visit of the UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura to Iran.

Amir Abdollahian reaffirmed Tehran’s support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis and the intra-Syrian talks.

The two sides also underlined that solutions to Syria and Yemen are solely of political type, and that the continuation of military and security approaches would just further complicate the situation.

Amir Abdollahian and Bogdanov once again stressed Tehran and Moscow’s support for the UN efforts for political resolution of Syria’s crisis, and warned of the growing terrorist moves in war-torn Syria and Yemen.

Iran and Russia, known as the main allies of Syria, have redoubled efforts to find a solution to the crisis that has plagued the Arab country for more than four years.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists, including militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group, currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

More than 250,000 people have been killed in the five-year conflict that has driven 4 million refugees abroad.

Yemen’s defenseless people have also been under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime for months.
