Mideast Stability Impossible without Iran: Greek PM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday praised Iran as a very important and powerful country in the region, and voiced Athens’ willingness to expand its cooperation with Tehran in different fields.

“Iran is a major and powerful country in the region, and the establishment of stability in the insecure Middle East is only possible with Iran’s presence,” Tsipras noted in a meeting with Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri here in Tehran.

He further underlined the necessity for enhancing the Iran-Greece ties, particularly after the recent implementation of the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

He described the agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) as important, saying it has created a very positive outlook for Iran and all countries interested in having strategic cooperation with the Islamic Republic.

“The two countries can have extensive cooperation in the fields of energy, shipping, trade, tourism, and new technologies, and make optimal use of the available facilities,” Tsipras stated.

He further gave assurance that Greece, as an EU member and a country lying between three continents, will play a constructive role in expansion of Iran’s ties with other EU member states.

Jahangiri, for his part, stressed that Tehran welcomes the promotion of its ties with Athens in all fields, and that all capacities should be used for the enhancement of mutual trade cooperation.

He further highlighted Iran’s strategic position in the Middle East, saying that the country can become an appropriate hub and reliable market for the export of Greek products as well as those of other EU member states to the region.
