Spokesman: Principles of Iran's Foreign Policy to Remain Unchanged in New Gov't

“The new Iranian government would definitely have its own approaches and negotiation methods, but the national interests are not subject to change and the new government, too, would definitely safeguard them,” Seyed Abbas Araqchi told Tasnim today.

“I am sure the new government would feel committed to safeguard national interests, as well as the principles of the (Islamic) Revolution but in its foreign policy, but it will utilize different methods, which we hope would bear better results” he said.

The Iranian diplomat expressed certainty that in the future with the new approaches which would be applied by Dr. Rouhani’s government, Iran will enter a new era.

He meanwhile stressed that the basics of the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran are fixed and they are based on the values of the Islamic Revolution and the country’s national interests, and reiterated, “Any (Iranian) government is obliged to abide by those norms.”

Both the western media and the world politicians have been waiting for the new Iranian government to take charge of the country’s affairs and to observe the actual effects of this change in Iran’s internal political set up on the country’s foreign relations ever since the victory of President-elect Hassan Rouhani.

The US Congress, for instance, postponed sending its annual sanctions legislation on Iran to the White House reportedly over certain considerations after the election of Hassan Rouhani as the Islamic Republic’s next president.
