Iran: No Message Sent to US for Direct Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran categorically rejected news on forwarding a message to US officials and expressing interest in holding direct talks with Washington over the country’s peaceful nuclear program.

The New York Times had reported on July 26 that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had told US officials this month that Iran favored direct talks with the United States on its nuclear energy program.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has not requested direct talks with the US,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi said on Saturday.

The US daily report also claimed that Maliki had told the US ambassador in Baghdad in an early July meeting that he was relaying a message from the Iranian officials and that Iran’s President-elect Hassan Rouhani would be serious about any possible negotiation with the United States.
