Envoy: Iran, Azerbaijan Reach Agreement on Aras River

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's envoy to Azerbaijan announced that the country plans to save endangered Oroumieh Lake, northwestern Iran, after it agreed with Baku on transferring Iran’s share of Aras River, along the two countries' joint borders, to the salt lake.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has a plan for using its share of the boarder river, and we have reached agreement with the Azeri side on transferring our share of the Aras River to Oroumieh Lake,” Mohsen Pakayeen said at a press conference in Baku.

He added that implementation phase of the plan for transferring Aras River’s water to Oroumieh Lake will take two to three years.

He pointed out that no illegal move is going to take place and the relevant organizations in Azerbaijan Republic, are well aware of the details of the plan.

The Aras is a river located in and along the countries of Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. Its total length is 1,072 kilometers. Given its length and a basin that covers an area of 102,000 km², it is one of the largest rivers of the Caucasus.

The Aras River rises near Erzurum, Turkey. It meets with the Akhurian River southeast of Digor, flows along the Turkish-Armenian border, and then near a corridor that connects Turkey to Nakhchivan. It then flows along the Iranian-Azerbaijan and the Iranian-Armenian border. The river then flows along the border between Iran and Azerbaijan to meet with the Kura River at the village of Sabirabad. It then directly flows into the Caspian Sea.
