Merkel: Germany Seeking to Deepen Ties with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for strengthening of ties between Germany and Iran during the administration of the new president, Hassan Rouhani.

In a congratulatory message to Rouhani on his election as Iran’s new president, the German chancellor expressed hope for the establishment of enhanced relations with Tehran.

Merkel also announced that Rouhani’s election raises the hope for a new phase in constructive cooperation to help promote regional and international peace and security.

The message was submitted to Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Western European Affairs Abolqasem Delfi by German Ambassador to Tehran Michael Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg on Wednesday.

Hassan Rouhani emerged victorious in the presidential election of June 14, which was marked by a high voter turnout.

Later, the Iranian president said his administration will try to improve relations with world countries through understanding, confidence-building and mutual respect.

He also stated that his administration would bring “peace and friendship for all world nations.”

Rouhani took the oath of office before the parliament as the country’s seventh president on August 4, one day after endorsement of his presidency by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
