Spokesman: US, Britain's Role in 1953 Coup in Iran to Remain in Nation’s Memory

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian nation will never forget the illegal acts carried out by the US and Britain in orchestrating the 1953 coup, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said.

On August 19, 1953, the British and US intelligence agencies orchestrated a coup that toppled Iran's then Prime Minister Mohammad Mosadeq after he tried to nationalize the country's oil production which had been under British control through the Anglo-Persian Oil Company.

“The Iranian nation will never forget the illegal interference by the US and the UK in Mordad 28 (August 19, 1953) coup (against Iran),” Seyed Abbas Araqchi said in his weekly press conference in Tehran on Tuesday.

Earlier, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has for the first time published a document that confirms Washington’s role in the 1953 coup d’état against the democratically-elected Iranian prime minister.

George Washington University's National Security Archive has obtained the documents under the Freedom of Information Act, a law that promotes government transparency in the US.

Araqchi further expressed the hope that US acknowledgment of orchestrating the coup would stop the western countries from further meddling in Iran’s internal affairs.

“I hope we will not witness such cases again,” he added.
