UN Official Underlines Iran’s Vital Role in Middle East

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior official of the United Nations praised Tehran’s active cooperation with the international organization, stressing that Iran can use its vital role in the Middle East for settling regional conflicts, the Syrian crisis in particular.

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman highlighted the influential role of Iran in the Middle East during a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh in Tehran on Monday .

The UN official also expressed his gratitude to Iran for its effective cooperation with the world body on campaign against drug trafficking, environment protection, climate change, hosting refugees, and interaction with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) . 

He further emphasized the need for mutual cooperation between Tehran and the UN to resolve the serious crisis that has plagued Syria for nearly three years.

Akhoundzadeh, for his part, said Iran has always supported peace and stability across the world and will do its best to restore peace to Syria.

He also announced his country's readiness to increase its share in UN peacekeeping missions.

The American UN official arrived in Tehran on Sunday night at the top of a UN delegation.

He is the first top UN official since Secretary General Ban Ki-moon travelled to Iran in August 2012 to attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Before joining the United Nations, Feltman served as US assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs from August 2009 to June 2012 with the rank of career minister. He was previously the United States ambassador to Lebanon from July 2004 to January 2008.
