Omani Minister: Iran, Oman Keen to Build Gas Pipeline

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and Oman are ready to translate the excellent political relations between them into economic cooperation, Omani minister of oil and gas said, adding the two sides have agreed in principle to build a pipeline to carry Iranian gas to Oman.

Muhammad bin Hamad bin Sayf al-Rumhi said in an interview with Iran Petroleum monthly that Oman and Iran have signed an agreement on August 26 to work on previous negotiations between the two countries to put the planned ideas into action.

The issues previously agreed on, the Omani minister said, included the development of a number of energy projects such as “putting up a (gas) pipeline.”

There is an apetite on the side of both Iranian and Omani officials to translate the cordial and historical political relations between the two sides into economic cooperation, the Omani minister said.

In a relevant development, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh stated that Iran plans to start gas exports to Oman by the next two years, after the two sides signed an agreement on energy cooperation during Omani Sultan’s visit to Tehran this week.

Under an agreement signed on Monday between Iran and Oman, gas export to the Arab neighboring country will start in less than two years, Zanganeh stated.

He also added that the gas transfer deal with Oman is the largest economic agreement between the two countries so far.

Rumhi was part of a delegation led by Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, who came to Tehran for an official visit on August 25.

Iran and Oman share control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and have always maintained cordial relations.
