MP: US Unable to Wage Full-Scale Attack against Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The financial realities of the US have undercut the ability of its military to get involved in a sustained, all-out war with Syria, an Iranian lawmaker said.
The United States is not in a condition to launch a full- scale military attack against Syria, and the current rhetoric about an imminent attack by the US and its allies is just a psychological campaign, member of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Abbas Ali Mansouri told Tasnim on Thursday.
Mansouri, however, did not reject the possibility of an attack, saying like in the case of Iraqi invasion in 2003 , the US has now come up with a pretext to strike Syria, and will not heed the report of the UN inspectors who are now in their third day of on-site investigations at the sites of an alleged chemical attack near Damascus.
The US went to war with Iraq based on the excuse that the country had weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), but the extensive search by the UN inspectors and the invaders themselves found no trace of such weapons.
“Syria in 2013 differs with Iraq in 2003 though, as the Syrians support their government and in addition to that, if there was any attack, the West’s ally, the Zionist regime, would be the first target,” the MP underscored.
Syria has accused the West of fabricating evidence to launch a strike, denied using chemical weapons and blamed opposition rebels for the attack on August 21, which reportedly killed hundreds of people near Damascus.
Commander of the Iranian (Basij) voluntary forces, too, said on Monday that the US is not capable of waging another war in the region, and lambasted Washington for nurturing terrorists.
The US and a few other countries that are beating the war drums against Syria are not able to enter a serious war, because they have neither the economic strength for a new war, nor the required military spirit for that purpose, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi said.
On Sunday, too, a senior Iranian commander cautioned the White House against military intervention in Syria, saying that it would bring about harsh consequences for the US.
“The US is aware of the limit of red line in the Syrian front, and any crossing of the Syrian red line will have severe consequences for the White House,” Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri said on Sunday.
