MP Slams US for Ignoring Iran’s Warning about Syria Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian lawmaker said Tehran had warned Washington about the use of chemical weapons by terrorists in Syria, but the US made light of the warning.

Tehran had informed Washington that rebels fighting against the Syrian government possessed chemical weapons but "Unfortunately the US did not heed our warning," Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said in a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Saturday.

The meeting came after an Iranian parliamentary delegation arrived in Damascus on Saturday to discuss the ways out of Syria’s current conditions and also to convey Iran’s message of support to the Syrian nation.

"As representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran we announce our opposition to any attack or war against Syria," Boroujerdi said.

"The Islamic Republic strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons by terrorist groups against the Syrian nation."

In a separate meeting with Syria’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham on the same day, Boroujerdi cautioned against the dire consequences of any foreign military intervention in Syria, which he said would not be limited to the Syrian borders, and reiterated Tehran’s strong opposition to US threats against the country.

He also expressed Iran's full support for the Syrian government and nation, saying Iran is ready to render any help to boost Syria's resistance power.

The war rhetoric against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of having launched a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, a line that has been used by some western countries as the pretext for a possible military action against Syria.
