Spokeswoman: Syria Crisis to Resolve Politically, Only

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The lingering crisis in Syria can only be resolved through diplomatic and political ways, said the new spokesperson of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Sunday.

"Military actions have serious consequences and can inflame tensions in the region, so they should be avoided," said Marziyeh Afkham, the spokeswoman of Iran's foreign ministry on Sunday.

She added that Iran has laid the groundwork for negotiations aimed at peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis, and called on regional countries to support a negotiated settlement to the crisis and refrain from "adventurism" in the region.

Afkham is the first woman to have been appointed as the spokesperson of the foreign ministry since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Working as media and public diplomacy director at foreign ministry, Afkham had also worked as General Directorate of Media and Information Office for eight years.
