Speaker Reiterates Iran’s Opposition to State Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian parliament speaker once again voiced Tehran’s strong opposition to state terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, saying they have no place in Iran's national security doctrine and only bring about more insecurity.

State-sponsored terrorism imperils global security and Iran is strongly against such measures, said Ali Larijani at the opening ceremony of the first national conference on modern naval technologies in Iran’s northern city of Nowshahr this morning, adding " we believe state terrorism and extremism" are the leading causes of the ongoing insecurity in the world.

Larijani also echoed Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s comments on the prohibition of the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), stressing that such weapons have no place in the country's security doctrine.

On the crisis in Syria and the recent chemical attacks, the Iranian official said the terrorists "have used chemical weapons since several months ago" and criticized those who "unfairly" accuse the Syrian government of supporting terrorism and using such weapons.

"We believe Syria must carry out reforms," he said, but "terrorists should not have a role in a democratic process there."

Over the past days, the US and its allies have been working on a plot to take military action against Syria after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of having launched a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.

Damascus, however, has categorically rejected the claim, and announced that rebels themselves carried out the gas attack as a ploy to draw in foreign military intervention.
