MP: US Military Assault on Syria Aims to Weaken Resistance Front

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A ranking Iranian lawmaker said the main objective behind a possible US military action against the Syrian government is to weaken the resistance front in the region as it has endangered the interests of the Zionist regime.

The US and some of its allies have accused the Syrian government of carrying out a chemical attack, but their motive behind this is to weaken the resistance, as this front "has endangered the interests of the Zionist regime," Mohammad Hassan Asafari, a member of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy commission, told Tasnim on Wednesday.

Another reason for their threats and accusations, he said, is to browbeat Syria into conceding points in the forthcoming Geneva II conference.

The White House has been pushing for military action on Syria, after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of carrying out a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, a charge the Syrian government has strongly denied.

US President Barack Obama, however, stopped short of ordering a strike on Saturday and said he would seek the endorsement of Congress for any assault on Syria.

To strike Syria, Obama faces a public averse to another military involvement, whose consequences are not predictable and may drag the US into a full-fledged war.

The latest opinion poll shows public opposition to involvement in the Syrian conflict is growing, with six out of 10 Americans opposing missile strikes and lawmakers also divided.
