Iranian Lawmakers Meet Lebanese President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian parliamentary delegation, led by Chairman of Parliament's Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi, held a meetings with Lebanese president on Tuesday.

The Syrian crisis was the main issue discussed in the meeting between Iranian lawmakers and the top Lebanese official. Lebanese President Michel Sleiman, whose country hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees, said that the crisis could only be resolved through diplomatic talks and peaceful ways, and that the chemical weapons attack had to be investigated under the supervision of international organizations.

Boroujerdi, for his part, criticized the US and its allies for threatening Syria with military action, saying that use of force can only aggravate the existing situation and lead to more extremism.

The Iranian delegation also had a meeting with the Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Tamam Salam earlier in the day and another meeting with Hezbollah Secretary-General Seyed Hassan Nasrallah.

The Lebanese prime minister expressed deep concern over the escalation in Syria, as the spillover effect of the conflict is keenly felt in Lebanon, and said a military attack on Syria would only benefit terrorist groups.

He also urged the Islamic Republic to use all its diplomatic potentials to avert a military attack on Syria.

The US has been pushing for military action on Syria, after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of carrying out a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.

The Syrian government denies any involvement and blames rebels for the attack.
