Iran Minister: No Need to Send Defense Equipment to Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian minister of defense said Tehran does not deem it necessary to send any defense equipment to Syria in case of a possible US assault, as the country has suitable defensive and offensive weapons.
“There is no need that we send defense equipment to Syria, as this country is in possession of proper defensive and assault equipment,” Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said on the sidelines of the Wednesday morning cabinet session in a short meeting with reporters.
He added that the main problem facing Syria these days is the "terrorism phenomenon" which has targeted people, something that has already spilled out of the Syrian borders.
Dehqan further blamed the regional tumults on foreign intervention, adding that the US and the Zionist regime of Israel are after implementing their agendas across the region.
The US has been pushing for military action on Syria, after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of carrying out a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, a charge the Syrian government has strongly denied.
US President Obama, however, stopped short of ordering a strike on Saturday and said he would seek the endorsement of Congress for any assault on Syria.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned the West against taking one-sided action in Syria.
Putin also announced that Moscow has provided some components of the S-300 air defense missile system to Syria but has frozen further shipments.
He suggested Russia may sell the potent missile systems elsewhere if western nations attack Syria without UN Security Council backing.
