Commander: Iran Key Player in Securing Regional Stability

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian armed forces use their might to prevent and deter threats from hostile powers, safeguard the country's interests and ensure peace and security in the region, a top commander said said on Wednesday.

Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili said Wednesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran's armed forces use their military capabilities to deter threats from enemies, protect the country’s national interests as well as territorial integrity, and promote peace and stability in the region.

“Iran is a great, independent country with a historic identity and civilization, which is influential in political equations and serves as the anchor of stability in the region,” Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili said on Wednesday.

But the region is in the grip of serious crises which have been aggraveted by US threat to use military force against Syria. Washington accuses the Syrian government of using chemical weapons against civilians on several occasions, the last of them on 21 August on the outskirts of the capital.

The government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denied involvement and said the rebels were responsible for all these attacks.

The Iranian commander condemned the intervention of foreign powers in the internal affairs of regional countries, saying such meddling has compounded the existing crises in North Africa and the Middle East.

In recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and has attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

Tehran has assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to other countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.
