Iranian President Hopes for Expansion of Ties with Georgia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed the hope that ties between Iran and Georgia would further expand in political, social and cultural fields in the future.

“I hope that we will witness further expansion of cooperation between the two countries in political, social and cultural fields on the basis of mutual respect,” Rouhani said in a message to Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili on Monday.

The Iranian chief executive’s message was sent in response to a congratulatory message from Ivanishvili, who had earlier felicitated President Rouhani on his assuming office.

In a relevant development last month, minister of foreign affairs of Georgia, in a felicitation messages to her Iranian counterpart, called for expansion of ties with the Islamic Republic.

Maya Panjikidze had stated that ties between the two sides have improved in a cordial atmosphere, adding that Mohammad Javad Zarif’s appointment as Iran's foreign minister could provide the appropriate ground for deeper bilateral relations.

Iran and Georgia have close political and economic ties and there are hundreds of companies registered by Iranians in Georgia.
