Top UN Official to Arrive in Iran for Cooperation

United Nations Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos is scheduled to visit Iran September 13-16.

She is scheduled to meet some high-ranking Iranian officials and hold talks on humanitarian assistance, and expanding cooperation between Iran and the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The Undersecretary General and Emergency Relief Coordinator (USG/ERC) is responsible for the oversight of all emergencies requiring United Nations humanitarian assistance. She also acts as the central focal point for governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental relief activities.

The Syrian crisis and ways to help the refugees and internally displaced people in that country are the main issues to be discussed during the visit of the UN official.

In a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Damascus Mohammad-Reza Raouf Sheibani in the Syrian capital Damascus earlier this month, Amos praised Iran for sending humanitarian aid to crisis-hit Syria, and called on Tehran to help facilitate the delivery of the world body’s humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people.

Iran has dispatched several consignments of humanitarian supplies, including medicines and medical equipment, to Syria to help people affected by the unrest in the Arab country.

According to UN refugee agency more than two million Syrians have fled their country, making it the worst refugee crisis since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. More than four million people are also displaced within Syria, who are in dire need of food and medicine.
