Larijani Stresses Iran, Iraq's Identical Views on Settlement of Syria Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Parliament speakers of Iran and Iraq underlined that the Syrian crisis would be resolved only through a political approach, and both described the presence of terrorists in Syria as a problem for the whole region.

Speaking in a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Osama al-Nujaifi on Saturday evening, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said Tehran and Baghdad hold the same views on the process to resolve the Syrian conflict, adding that both neighboring countries condemn any military intervention in Syria.

Iraqi Parliament Speaker is in Tehran for a 4-day official visit, during which he will meet senior Iranian officials.

“The two countries believe in political solution as the way to resolve the Syrian conditions, and consider terrorists as a problem for the whole region,” Larijani added.

The Iraqi parliament speaker, for his part, warned against any military strike on Syria, and called on all foreigners involved in the Syrian conflict to leave the country.

The US had been pressing for military action on Syria since a suspected chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, which it blamed on the forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The government of Syria has denied involvement and said the rebels were responsible.

But the simmering tensions started to cool after Russia, on Monday, proposed that Syrian stockpile of chemical weapons come under control of the international community for destruction. Later, US President Barack Obama put on hold his plans for a military attack on Syria, and now Russia and the US have agreed on a proposal to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons arsenal.
