Iran Releases 25 Indian Fishermen: Swaraj

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Indian fishermen held captive in Iran for crossing territorial waters since March have been released by Iranian officials, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.

“I am happy to inform that 25 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu who were detained by Iranian Coast Guards since March 2017," Swaraj said in a message posted on her Twitter account on Friday, Hindustan Times reported.

“I appreciate the relentless efforts of Indian Embassy in Tehran for securing their release," she added in a follow-up post.

The fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been repatriated to Bahrain, according to the report.

The fishermen, working for the Bahraini regime, were detained for entering the Iranian waters without permission.

On April 3, 22 other Indian sailors, who had been arrested for trespassing territorial waters, were also released by the Islamic Republic.
