UN Official Expresses Opposition to Military Action in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Military action is not a solution to the Syrian conflict at all, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos said today.

In a Wednesday meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian here in Tehran, Amos stressed that military action cannot resolve the prolonged crisis in Syria, and added that the efforts should be focused on political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict.

The UN emergency relief coordinator further noted that sending humanitarian aids to Syria has been difficult due to the ongoing crisis and violent clashes.

The Iranian official, for his part, stated that the only solution to the turmoil in the Arab country is that the Syrian nation be authorized to decide its own fate through a democratic process without any foreign pressure or meddling.

Amos said Saturday the Iranian government could play an effective role in crisis response. "Iran has a well-developed system for disaster preparedness and response and often shares their capacity and expertise when responding to emergencies in other countries," she said in a statement.

On September 5, Amos praised Iran for sending humanitarian aid to Syria, calling on Tehran to help facilitate the delivery of the world body’s humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people.

Iran has dispatched consignments of humanitarian supplies, including medicines and medical equipment, to the conflict-stricken people in the Arab country.
