Iran-G5+1 Ministerial Meeting in New York Possible: Nuclear Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said a ministerial meeting between the Islamic Republic and six world powers might be held in New York on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in September.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Sunday, Salehi said he thinks Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif would take an action to initiate a meeting with his counterparts in the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany).

He further emphasized that the AEOI is confident about the Foreign Ministry’s continuous pursuit of issues related to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The likely ministerial meeting of Iran and the Group 5+1 would focus on the implementation process of the nuclear deal reached between the two sides back in 2015.

Iran and the six powers on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion over the text of the JCPOA. The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.
