FM to Brief Parliament on Rouhani-Obama Phone Conversation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's foreign minister is scheduled to brief members of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission on details of President Hassan Rouhani’s meetings in New York, particularly his Friday’s telephone conversation with US President Barack Obama.

Mohammad Javad Zarif is expected to give details of President Rouhani’s meetings with officials from different countries during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, and of the telephone conversation between the Iranian and US presidents, in a hearing held by the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Iranian lawmaker Mohammad Hassan Asafari told Tasnim on Saturday.

President Rouhani, who had travelled to New York to attend the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly, had a telephone conversation with his American counterpart Barack Obama on Friday just on his way to leave New York City to fly back to Tehran.

Asafari, himself a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, further noted that the Iranian foreign minister is also scheduled to brief the Iranian parliamentarians on his talks with foreign ministers of the Group 5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany).

Zarif and his counterparts from the G5+1 held a meeting on Thursday at the United Nations headquarters in New York, hosted by the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

The meeting, attended by seven foreign ministers, marked the highest-level, direct contact between the US and Iran in many years as the US secretary of state, John Kerry, came face-to-face with the Iranian foreign minister.

After the meeting, Zarif said he had "very good and constructive" talks with foreign ministers of the six world powers.

“I’m satisfied with this first step, now we have to see whether we can match our positive words with serious deeds, so that we can move forward,” the Iranian minister said in a press conference after the talks.
