Trump’s Remarks Damage Credibility of Americans: Iran’s Larijani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani shrugged off recent comments made by US President Donald Trump against the international nuclear deal with Iran and said such remarks only undermine the Americans’ credibility.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in the Russian port city of Saint Petersburg on Thursday, Larijani pointed to Trump’s claims about Iran’s non-commitment to the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying raising such claims is not surprising or important because he has made lots of such weird remarks since he took office.

“These comments badly damage the Americans’ credibility,” he said, adding that authorities in Europe and other countries denounced Trump’s behavior.

The Iranian parliament speaker went on to say that in case of US withdrawal from the JCPOA, a good opportunity would arise for Iran to create new developments.

Trump’s team now faces an Oct. 15 deadline to tell Congress whether it will continue to certify that Iran is complying with the JCPOA. Trump is expected to “decertify” the deal.

If Trump refuses to certify, Congress will have 60 days to decide whether to re-impose US sanctions on Iran.

Last month, Trump, during an address to the United Nations General Assembly, said, "The Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into frankly that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don't think you've heard the last of it”.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) reached the 159-page nuclear agreement in July 2015 and implemented it in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.
