AEOI Chief: Iran Has Identified Sites for Future Nuclear Power Plants

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has carried out studies to determine proper locations for construction of new nuclear power plants, with the country’s southern coasts having the priority to host the facilities, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced.

Ali Akbar Salehi said on Tuesday that the necessary work to identify locations for future nuclear power plants have been done, adding that the top priority for construction of the next power plants are given to Iran’s southern coasts.

He also noted that as these new power plants are built along with water desalination plants, country’s southern provinces, which are in a growing need of fresh water, provide suitable sites for such power plants.

Salehi went on to say that negotiations with Russia are underway for construction of the new plants, but added that the number of the facilities is unclear and will be announced as soon as an agreement is reached.

On September 23, Salehi had announced that technical negotiations between Iranian and Russian experts are well underway for construction of a new nuclear power plant in Bushehr.

“We are negotiating with Russians for construction of the next power plant. Negotiations have made good progress,” he said at the time.

The AEOI chief further noted that Iranian and Russian experts now conduct technical negotiations to come up with a plan to construct another nuclear power plant in Iran, expressing the hope that construction work on the project will start in the near future.
