Iranian Official Warns against Plots to Undermine Iraq’s Unity

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi highlighted the importance of unity among the Iraqi people, saying that the Arab country should remain vigilant against plots to infiltrate Iraq.

Speaking at a meeting on Saturday with Sheikh Humam Hamoudi, the head of Iraq’s Islamic Supreme Council and the country’s first deputy parliament speaker, Ayatollah Shahroudi said the council plays a major role in preserving unity among Islamic groups because it is respected by most of them.

He further pointed to the latest developments in the Muslim world and said some Arab countries are seeking to infiltrate into Iraq and spread thoughts that are contrary to the objectives of the Islamic Supreme Council.

The Iranian cleric also called on the Iraqi nation to remain vigilant against plots to undermine their unity.

Hamoudi, for his part, praised Tehran’s support for Baghdad and said the constructive cooperation between “the Iranian and Iraqi brothers” have led to the resolution of many problems in the Arab country.

Iraq has been facing the threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, blunted the edge of Daesh offensive and later forced the terrorists withdraw from much of the territory they had occupied.

Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq’s solidarity and prosperity.
