UN Chief Calls for Pressure on Saudis to End 'Stupid' Yemen War

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday that the Yemen war is causing terrible suffering to the Yemeni people and called for a renewed push to end the "stupid war", there.

"I believe this is a stupid war. I think this war is against the interests of Saudi Arabia and the Emirates... (and) of the people of Yemen," he said on CNN.

"What we need is a political solution."

Guterres said he hoped a Saudi blockade of Yemen's ports, would be lifted.

"This war is causing, in my opinion, terrible suffering to the Yemeni people," while also harming Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, he added.

"It's in the interests of everybody to stop this war."

Yemeni people have been under massive attacks by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia for nearly three years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Over 14,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
