Salehi: Iran to Build Dual-Purpose N. Power Plants on Southern Coasts

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has identified new locations both on northern and southern coasts of the country for constructing new nuclear power plants, Iran's nuclear chief said, and stated that Tehran prefers southern coasts since the new facilities can be used for desalinating water as well.

Speaking to Tasnim News Agency on Monday, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said that locations for construction of new nuclear power plants along the country’s northern and southern shores have been determined, adding that the southern coasts have the priority to host the facilities.

On the reason why the Persian Gulf coastline provides suitable sites for such power plants, Salehi said the facilities can generate electricity, and at the same time “desalinate seawater to provide fresh water for the provinces on the Persian Gulf," which suffer from shortage of fresh water resources.

On September 23, Salehi had announced that technical negotiations between Iranian and Russian experts were well underway for construction of a new nuclear power plant in Bushehr.

“We are negotiating with Russians for construction of the next power plant. Negotiations have made good progress,” he said at the time.

The AEOI chief further noted that Iranian and Russian experts now conduct technical negotiations to come up with a plan to construct another nuclear power plant in Iran, expressing the hope that construction work on the project will start in the near future.
