Muslim States’ Parliament Speakers to Convene in Tehran in January: Official
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A gathering of parliament speakers of Islamic countries will be held here in the Iranian capital next month, a special aide to Iran’s parliament speaker said.
It is slated for January 13-17, Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Monday on the sidelines of an extraordinary meeting of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUOICM) on Palestine.
He said the extraordinary meeting was organized in preparation for the upcoming assembly of Muslim world parliament speakers.
It is also an opportunity for Iran to announce loud and clear that the Islamic Republic considers al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of Palestine and underline the need for unity among all Palestinian groups until the liberation of all occupied lands, he added.
The meeting, attended by the parliament speakers of Iran, Iraq and Mali as well as parliamentary delegations from 7 other Muslims countries, mainly focused on a recent decision taken by US President Donald Trump to declare Quds the capital of the Israeli regime.
Trump officially declared the disputed city of Quds Israel’s capital despite warnings from around the world that the measure risks triggering a fresh wave of violence in the Middle East.
In a speech at the White House on December 6, Trump said his administration would also begin a years-long process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to the holy city.
Israel has occupied East Quds since the 1967 Middle East war. It annexed the area in 1980 and sees it as its exclusive domain. Under international law, the area is considered to be occupied territory.
