Iran Warns US against Missteps on JCPOA

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson reminded the US administration that there would be “proportional and heavy” reaction from Tehran to any illogical US decision about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), such as withdrawing from the nuclear deal.

“Given the nature of the JCPOA, which is an international agreement, a possible US withdrawal (from the deal) and any (other) illogical conduct will provoke the Islamic Republic of Iran’s proportional and heavy reaction,” Bahram Qassemi said at a weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday.

As regards the US administration’s congressionally mandated deadline of mid-January to certify Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA and the US president’s possible move to re-impose sanctions on Iran, Qassemi said Tehran is ready to deal with all possible scenarios.

“Iran has devised scenarios for any (US) decision, as all options for any situation are on the table for Iran,” he underlined, saying Tehran will quickly put its plans into practice commensurate with US moves.

The US administration would definitely regret making any blatant mistake in its decision about the JCPOA, Qassemi concluded.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached the 159-page nuclear agreement in July 2015 and implemented it in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.
