President Rouhani: Some of JCPOA Achievements Everlasting

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The US president is making every effort, but in vain, to nullify the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said, adding that, whatever the nuclear deal’s fate, it has resulted in a series of achievements that would last forever.

Speaking at an academic conference in Tehran on Sunday, Rouhani played down criticisms regarding the flaws in the JCPOA, saying it is an agreement that the US president has failed to scrap despite all his attempts over the past year.

Trump’s failure means victory for international commitments and victory of law over dictatorship, the president added.

He also said that certain achievements of the JCPOA would never fade, as the agreement proved that all complicated issues in the world could be settled through negotiations.

The comments came after US President Donald Trump extended the JCPOA for the third time on Friday, but also laid down conditions for waiving the anti-Iran sanctions again.

Trump said he will not grant another reprieve unless changes are made to the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry reiterated that the JCPOA is a valid international document that would not be renegotiated at all.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna in July 2015, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.
