Iran’s Speaker highlights Issue of Palestine in PUIC Meeting

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The ongoing conference of Islamic parliaments in Tehran is expected to focus on the issue of Palestine, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said, stressing that Muslim countries’ parliaments attach especial importance to the issue.

In comments at the opening of the 13th conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States (PUIC) in Tehran on Tuesday, Larijani highlighted the significance that the Muslim nations attach to the issue of Palestine and the holy city of al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The ongoing conference in expected to focus on the issue of Quds, he added, noting that a permanent committee of the PUIC is tasked with addressing the issue regularly.

He further pointed to the growing social and political presence of women in Islamic societies, saying a remarkable number of women have taken seats in the parliaments of Islamic nations.

The 13th PUIC conference got underway in Tehran on Tuesday morning. Preparations for the conference were made during an extraordinary meeting of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUOICM) on Palestine, held in December.

The meeting, which will close on Wednesday evening, follows a series of sideline gatherings that had begun on January 12, such as the 20th session of the General Committee of PUIC and the 39th Meeting of the PUIC Executive Committee.

The OIC, the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations, has around 60 members.

The organization, established in 1969, was created to protect the interests of Muslims and promote international peace.
