Russian Envoy Hopes for Enhanced Economic Ties with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia’s Ambassador to Iran Levan Jagarian highlighted the common stances of Moscow and Tehran on Syria and against terrorism, expressing the hope for the development of bilateral ties in various fields, particularly in economic areas through facilitated banking interaction.

In a meeting with governor of Iran’s central city of Isfahan, the Russian ambassador underlined the effective coordination between Iran and Russia in the fight against terrorism, saying Moscow shares views with Tehran about Syria.

He also hailed Iran for its commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), stressing that Russia is a vocal critic of the United States’ moves on the nuclear deal and supports the Islamic Republic’s stances in this regard.

The envoy then pointed to plans to broaden economic relations between the two countries, saying Moscow expects to host a big delegation of Iranian business people and economic activists in an upcoming session of Iran-Russia economic cooperation joint committee, slated for March 5 and 6.

For his part, the governor of Isfahan called for the launch of direct flights between Isfahan and Russia’s St. Petersburg, and proposed plans to boost cultural and tourism ties between the two cities.

Elsewhere in the gathering, the new Russian consul in Isfahan was inaugurated by the ambassador.

In January 2017, Iran and Russia held a conference in Tehran to mark 515 years of bilateral relations. In a message to the conference, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called for diversification of relations between the two countries, which he said will contribute to peace and stability in Central Asia and the Middle East.

Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years, with both supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s legitimate government against foreign-backed militancy.
