Iran Denies Plans to Talk about Ties with US in Geneva

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister ruled out the possibility of any direct meeting with the team of American negotiators in Geneva concerning bilateral relations between Tehran and Washington.

There is no talk of bilateral relations with the US during the negotiations with the Group 5+1, Abbas Araqchi, who leads Iran's team of negotiators in Geneva nuclear talks, told reporters on Tuesday.

This came as Araqchi held bilateral talks with US Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman late on Tuesday over Iran’s nuclear energy program, on the sidelines of the two-day talks in Geneva that have brought together Iran's representatives with those from the so-called G5+1 -- the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain, all countries with permanent seats on the UN Security Council, plus Germany.

The two sides are planned to resume negotiations on Wednesday.

Araqchi said the world powers had been receptive to the Iranian plans, adding that the first day went well. He also said the Iranian delegation holds meetings with all foreign teams to discuss the issue of Tehran’s nuclear program during the two-day talks, but dismissed any plan about talks on bilateral relations.

On Tuesday, US State Department Deputy Spokeswoman Marie Harf announced during a break in nuclear talks that Washington would “welcome” a bilateral meeting with the Iranian diplomatic team in Geneva.
