Iran to Open Car Plant in Azerbaijan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will inaugurate a car factory in the Republic of Azerbaijan in an upcoming visit, Iran’s economy minister said.

Speaking to reporters at the conclusion of a Tuesday session of a joint commission on Iran-Azerbaijan cooperation, Massoud Karbasian said an Iranian automobile factory will open in the Republic of Azerbaijan during President Rouhani’s upcoming visit to the neighboring country.

The Iranian minister also highlighted the efficiency of a railroad that connects Iran’s northwestern city of Astara to Azerbaijan, saying the rail line will be extended to the city of Qazvin, 180 kilometers west of Tehran.

Karbasian also said that the two countries could work together on agricultural projects and pharmaceutical industry.

The 12th meeting of Iran-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation was held in Tehran on Tuesday, co-chaired by Karbasian and his Azeri counterpart Shahin Mustafayev.

The Iranian president is expected to travel to Baku in late March.

Iran and Azerbaijan have ramped up efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various areas.

In February 2016, Azeri President Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to Tehran, during which the two sides signed eleven memorandums of understanding and agreements to promote mutual cooperation in a range of fields.
