Syria Army Continues to Advance in Eastern Ghouta
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian forces and their allies continued to make gains in their fight against Takfiri terrorists in Eastern Ghouta, managing to move towards two key towns in southern edges of the district.
On Saturday, Syrian troops stepped up their attacks on Takfiri militants in Eastern Ghouta and advanced towards the towns of Kafr Batna and Saqba, according to a report carried by official SANA news agency.
Army units advanced steadily from Hamouriyah town, which had been liberated from terrorists two days ago, and destroyed the fortified positions of the terrorist organizations in the outskirts of Saqba, continuing to advance in the residential neighborhoods in the depth of the town as the terrorists’ ranks collapsed rapidly and many of them fled westwards towards the town of Hazeh, the report added.
After restoring control over Jisreen town, the report said, the army units continued their operations in the direction of Kafr Batna to the west in a scenario similar to the battle of Saqba, where the army managed to break the defense lines of the terrorists in the eastern and southeastern outskirts of the town, retaking large swathes deep into the heart of the town.
Eastern Ghouta, a besieged area on the outskirts of Damascus with some 400,000 people, has witnessed deadly violence over the past few weeks, as Takfiri terrorist outfits have launched mortar attacks on the Syrian capital in the face of an imminent humiliating defeat.
Syria's ambassador to the UN said over 40,000 civilians left Eastern Ghouta recently via a new security corridor opened by the government in the city of Hamouria.
Speaking at the UN Security Council on Friday, Bashar Ja'afari said following the liberation of Hamouria on Thursday, the government was assisting the evacuation of civilians “who were taken as human shields by terrorist groups.”
The Syrian army and its allies have managed to wrest control of more than 70 percent of the Eastern Ghouta district near Damascus, the Arab country’s army said on Saturday.
